Visitor address and access

Use Am Nordfriedhof 1, 40468 Düsseldorf for directions. This current address from the municipal service portal takes precedence; a conflicting postcode in an older contact display is not carried into this guide. Under the cemetery ordinance, municipal cemeteries are generally open continuously. Temporary exceptions are announced at the entrances.

Travel and assistance

Several bus routes serve the Nordfriedhof stop. Tram lines 705 and 707, together with route 729, also stop at Großmarkt. The city provides a free cemetery mobile for older people and visitors with limited mobility on weekdays. It operates from 09:00 to 17:00 between March and November, and from 10:00 to 16:00 between December and February; journeys must be reserved.

History as a garden monument

The first burial took place on 1 May 1884, and the site has been known as Nordfriedhof since 1904. At almost 70 hectares, it is Düsseldorf’s largest cemetery. Historic burial fields around the chapel have been protected since 1979, and the entire ensemble is now listed as a garden monument. An official orientation plan helps visitors navigate the extensive grounds.

Administration and grave care

The office hours of the municipal department are separate administration hours, not restrictions on access. A grave-care enquiry should identify the cemetery, plot, row and number where known and describe the requested work. This independent portal is neither the cemetery administration nor an official municipal service.
